Project Aims

Improvising Across Boundaries is a four-year collaborative research project funded by Science Foundation Ireland and the Irish Research Council as part of their Pathway programme. The project is led by Dr Sarah Raine as part of a wider team of researchers based at University College Dublin, Improvised Music Company (see Team), and a community of participating musicians based on the island of Ireland.

Improvising Across Boundaries aims to:

  • Establish a community of musicians.

  • Document the experiences of women and gender minority improvisers active on the island of Ireland.

  • Explore new ways of theorising and thinking about gender identity through improvisation and musical practice.

  • Produce useful resources, data and reports for academics, policymakers, musicians, and other industry professionals.

  • Provide a space for collaboration and community.

  • Highlight the key issues for women and gender minority improvising musicians.

  • Support new networks between the island of Ireland, the UK, and mainland Europe.

  • Provide ways forward towards equity and support.
